Luke Montalbano has been attending Collingwood School since the eighth grade and has been enthusiastically exploring a variety of interests as a member of the Collingwood community. He was born on September 13th, 2005, in Vancouver, and prior to attending Collingwood, he went to St. George's Junior School.
Luke's family background is also remarkable. His mother is a descendant of several founding fathers of the Métis Nation, while his father was born in the Northwest Territories to an immigrant family from Sicily. Growing up in East Vancouver, Luke's father attended UBC, and his mother moved to Vancouver from Manitoba after completing university. From his parents' experiences, Luke draws inspiration for his own hard work and perseverance. He believes in working hard to earn what he receives and not simply expecting everything to be given to him. This unique background has instilled in Luke a strong work ethic (one which all his peers will recognize) and a drive to achieve success through diligence and determination.
One of Luke's many passions is art, and he enjoys exploring different art forms. Although he appreciates all kinds of art, his current interest lies in the art of film and filmography. He is fascinated by the process of filming rather than script writing. Additionally, Luke is a skilled writer and finds persuasive writing particularly interesting, which has been a longstanding passion of his.
True to his Italian roots, soccer has been one of Luke's most fundamental pastimes since he was four years old. He played Division I and Division II soccer (football) for West Vancouver F.C. most recently and Vancouver United F.C. before that. As a player, he played as a left-back or left midfielder, but his speed also allowed him to play in the left wing or striker position. He has won several league titles and a league cup. Luke also participates in other sports such as track and field (short distance), tennis, and golf. He formerly played rugby as a winger and baseball as an outfielder. He played hockey until he was 13.
Apart from soccer, Luke dedicates his time to writing articles for Voices of Gen Z, a youth media organisation. His political commentaries about Canada and the United States have earned him the chance to interview notable figures such as professors, cabinet ministers, a Prime Minister, and a Premier. Luke intends to continue writing to gain a better understanding of the current events that affect the western world today. Luke's enthusiasm for history and politics is reflected in his love for AP World History, which he considers to be his preferred course at school. This class enables him to delve deeper into his interests while also discovering new areas of study. Biblical history and the governance systems of South America during the 19th century are just two topics that he has found particularly compelling.
Luke's mentor for the past three years has been Mr. Jean Charest, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. Through an internship and his work on Mr. Charest's campaign for leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, Luke has gained unparalleled experiences. He has learned that a person should be generous, supportive, passionate, and willing to do what is right, even if it is unpopular. His experiences with Mr. Charest has pushed him to succeed both in and out of school, and his dedication to his studies has paid off in more ways than one. Luke has participated in several contests, including the French for the Future essay writing contest, in which he won an $8,000 scholarship to the University of Montréal.
Luke's interest in art goes beyond just exploring different art forms. For him, art is a means of self-expression and interpretation. He believes that the beauty of art lies in the fact that it can be interpreted in a myriad of ways, and each person can find a personal connection to it. He believes that art should not be taken at face value. Instead, an interpretation of an artwork's meaning should run deeper than just the streaks of paint on canvas or the tempo of a piece of music. To Luke, art is not just a form of entertainment but a way of life that encourages one to reflect and find meaning in the world around them.
Furthermore, Luke's interest in the open-ended interpretation of art has led him to explore the concept of subjectivity in other areas of his life, and become a well-rounded individual. Luke's involvement in writing political commentary for Voices of Gen Z has provided him with a platform to express his views on current events and engage with a wider audience. His experiences with Mr. Charest and his participation in contests such as the French for the Future essay writing contest have inspired him to pursue his academic interests and strive for excellence in all aspects of his life.
Luke's curiosity and desire to make a positive impact on the world are reflected in his passion for art, politics, and writing. As he continues to pursue his academic and professional goals, he is sure to leave a lasting impact on those around him. Luke's passion for the arts, politics, and writing reflects his deep-seated desire to explore and understand the world on a deeper level, which will inevitably pave the way for him to achieve exciting opportunities and accomplishments in the future.
