Maria Tretiakova is a fellow Arts Mag and Ad Verum writer who enjoys the arts in all aspects of her life. Her love for creative writing flourished in the third grade and has only developed and grown since then. At a young age, she dreamed of writing a book one day, and she was fascinated with creating her own unique characters in all of her stories. Life these days gets pretty busy for Maria with her significant passion for rhythmic gymnastics, an activity she describes as “a graceful and artistic sport.” However, she still manages to make time for writing through Collingwood extracurriculars such as Arts Mag and Ad Verum. She also immerses herself in the arts throughout her life, being a part of the Senior Chamber Choir at Collingwood and playing the piano outside of school to pursue her enjoyment of music.
When asked about one person who inspired her, Maria responded that she is inspired by many people on the daily, but one of her true idols is Margarita Mamun. Having overcome many obstacles to achieve her dream of becoming an Olympic champion for rhythmic gymnastics, Margarita Mamun inspires Maria with her kind and gentle spirit on the outside but ferocity and determination that comes from within.
Maria’s passion for writing comes from her desire to express her thoughts. She may not be the most outgoing person or the loudest one in the room, so writing is her outlet for self-expression. It gives her the opportunity to use her thoughts and ideas to create something meaningful. Writing also allows Maria to convey her thoughts in the way she wants to. She admits that talking on the spot does not come easily to her but with writing, she has complete say over how to organize what she wants to express.
Maria stated that her writing is influenced by two key factors, her feelings and her interests. It started from a young age when she began writing fairy tales but her style has gradually developed to the more informative writing she enjoys pursuing today. For anyone seeking advice on first beginning to write, Maria offers some meaningful insight. She recommends that anyone beginning should write should not force anything. Let your own creative voice shine through your writing instead of trying to mould it to look like someone else's. What makes your writing unique is also what makes it special so, even though it is great to have inspirations, don’t lose your individuality along the way.
Although Maria is not planning her future career specifically around writing, she hopes and anticipates that art will always remain a part of her life whether that be through simply listening to music or writing in her journal. It was a pleasure interviewing Maria and you can find some of her work on the Collingwood Ad Verum Page linked below.
