Ms Jennifer Pickering is one of our newest additions to the Collingwood family. As a passionate teacher and student, Ms. Pickering has become a vital part of the art department.
Ms Pickering has had experiences all over the world, which makes her such an unique and insightful teacher. Born in Switzerland, she also lived in Paris, Montreal, and Okanagan Valley before moving to Vancouver. She completed her masters in Studio Art at UBC, and subsequently worked in Paris, Buenos Aires, Abu Dhabi and Riyadi. Ms Pickering moved back to Vancouver this June, after teaching at a private school in Saudi Arabia for the past four years. She is thrilled to start her journey here at Morven.
As a young girl, Ms Pickering always knew that she wanted to pursue a career in the arts. Art continues to play a big role in her life, and she does not shy away from educating others on this topic. To her, the importance of art should not be overlooked. She believes that visual and media art are unique forms of expression that connect communities both locally and globally. It is a way to ignite bigger conversations by sharing cultural, historical and scientific perspectives. Ms Pickering’s artwork is inspired by both her experiences overseas and the diverse Canadian communities she has worked with. Her artwork connects various cultures to reach a common ground of understanding and equality. She works with a variety of media, including photos, paintings, drawings, objects, sculptures, installation and video. The form of art she chooses to use for each piece of work varies; it depends on the concept she wants to convey.
“In art history, we distinguish between modern vs contemporary. The modern world begins around the 1860’s and ends around the 1970’s. That said, contemporary art is not just art that is made today, but rather an approach to art making that is based in the language of art developed by Conceptual Artists. Conceptual art developed as a direct response to the questions that artists were forced to ask themselves about the role of art in society, while living through some of the darker times in our histories.”
- Ms Pickering on how art affects the modern world
In addition to being a phenomenal artist, Ms Pickering is an inspiring educator. She enjoys teaching because it allows her to share her knowledge and her passion for art with the future leaders of our world. It also provides her with opportunities to work and internationally. Having these global experiences have helped her significantly with her professional career. Ms Pickering credits much of her professional experience to participating in international artist residencies and exhibitions.
In the future, Ms Pickering would love to continue to develop her own practice as a professional artist as well as passing her knowledge to her students. She is very excited to get to know her students and begin her next learning journey
