Nayantara Nilakantan
By: Jungyoon Park
Nayantara is an inspiring musician in Grade 11. Born in Montreal, she is a Collingwood lifer and has achieved so much throughout her musical career. Through her journey so far, she’s acquired an immense amount of knowledge and experience in the performing arts.
Nayantara started her musical venture when she was about 5 or 6 years old. Since then, she’s spent her days honing and perfecting her musical skills. She is proficient in the saxophone and the bass drum. Music is one of those things with infinite possibilities, from different tones to rhythms. The same piece of music could tell different stories when performed by different musicians. When Nayantara performs she is able to show her emotions and thoughts through her music, things you cannot express in everyday conversations. Music is a universal language that grants the ability to create/send messages that can be interpreted differently. It can inspire, without the limitation of lyrics. Unlike pure sounds, lyrics are words with selected meanings. Although they can be woven together to create powerful messages, words have to be understood to transmit their meaning to others. However, sounds don’t have selected meanings; rather, meaning is created together by the listeners and the performers. People don’t have to study the language of music to understand its meaning; they can come to their own conclusions through emotions, rhythm, tone, and much more. With the ability to create more with this universal language, Nayantara is able to make people smile and have fun during her performances. She has also performed with Collingwood’s Drum Corps in their provincial championships! With music, she has become more confident, which has allowed her to speak more openly.
The performing arts are a very important part of Nayantara’s identity. It’s been a part of her life for quite a while now and has allowed her to grow as a person. Within performing arts, she believes that the most important thing is the sense of community and friendship that develops between artists. Throughout her musical career, Nayantara has achieved so much already, however this is only the start of her journey. This is a message from Nayantara to all aspiring musicians: “If you make a mistake, just keep going -- act like you meant to do it and nobody will know as long as you have confidence.”
