Peter Fu
By Coco Wu
Peter Fu (grade 11) joined Collingwood in Grade 9 and has been taking the school’s various art courses since. His general opinions towards the art courses here have been mixed; he feels that they are oftentimes dull, uninspiring, or underwhelming.
Using an array of mediums to illustrate his ideas, Peter focuses on traditional art, using mediums such as ink on paper/vellum, watercolours on paper, oil on canvas, oil on wood, and tempera on canvas. Interestingly, he has a burning hatred for acrylics, noting, "It is neither crisp like watercolour nor creamy like oil. It is the kith and kin of the devil, completely godless and unclean, and should be in no situation regarded as a legitimate artistic medium. It is vacant in vitality and vigour, void of vibrancy and variety. Its only viable vocation is vandalization.”

Peter’s inspiration and motivation in art lies in his upcoming novel, “All Under Heaven.” When working on art for his novel, he enjoys thinking from a technical aspect. He draws parallels from the book and includes the worldview of the characters, as well as their artistic traditions, refraining from letting his personal values influence his novel. Conversely, when working on his other, more personal projects, he typically includes his beliefs, ideals and emotions.
Peter is currently working on an exciting new piece, but it remains unfinished for now. Below is his most recently completed work, a beautiful blend of textures, stylization, and brushwork in black and white. More of Peter’s art can be found on his Instagram @master_fooster
