Shuhan Zhang
By Heidi Davey
Shuhan Zhang is a talented grade 11 student with a strong passion for visual arts. She has positively impacted the arts community since coming to Collingwood in grade 6 from Westcot Elementary school and previously living in China up until grade 2. Although none of her family members were particularly focused on art, her grandfather used to have a metal work workshop and her grandmother practiced embroidery. Shuhan is the first in her family to delve deep into the art world. Although she played badminton and learned the piano when she was younger, visual arts remained the one hobby that stuck with her. Not only does Shuhan take Collingwood art classes, but she also revealed that she goes to an out-of-school studio almost every day and is currently preparing for university portfolio submissions.

During her time as an artist, Shuhan’s preferred artistic medium has pivoted from graphite sketching to digital art and animations thanks to its convenience and efficiency. She feels as though art is a way to express emotions and express your thoughts without any verbal communication. Although the meaning is a large factor within the art she creates, she also simply enjoys creating something appealing to view. Her progress over the years has changed how she perceives her own work as well as those of others. In the near future, Shuhan plans on submitting her art portfolio to universities such as Sheridan University in hopes of pursuing further education in 3D animation. For anyone beginning their artistic journey or looking for new ways to learn, she noted that referencing anatomy books when drawing people was very helpful for her. Reading up on the subjects of her pieces has proven to be very helpful when pursuing realism. Lastly, Shuhan expressed how she believes we are always improving ourselves and that her progress in visual art will serve as a solid foundation for future aspirations. Shuhan loves having the freedom to create art pieces and thoroughly enjoys the art making process!
